Coil Throwing

​

Dive deep into the process of coil throwing in order to make larger or more complex work on the potters wheel. Jonah will demonstrate his process for squeezing & rolling out large coils, attaching & pinching of coils and coil throwing. He will talk about using a torch to quickly dry pieces and the tools used to create his unique pieces. Jonah has been working with clay for 19 years and has been coil throwing for the past 9 years, so you can expect to learn various tips and tricks related to handling more unique shapes, minimizing water usage, controlling clay moisture while working, double-ribbing, firing style and more!

 

Bio:

Jonah Fleeger is a ceramic artist originally from Northwest Indiana. Fleeger attended a small boarding school called Verde Valley School, in Sedona, Arizona, which is where his love for ceramics first started.

In 2013, he received his BFA in ceramics from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago. After graduating he moved into a studio at the Lillstreet art center in Chicago where he taught ceramics and made glazes for the department. Since then he has completed post-baccalaureate programs at The University of Colorado Boulder and Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff, Arizona. In 2019, Fleeger received his MFA in ceramics from the Rhode Island School of Design. After graduate school he was a resident artist at the Morean Center for Clay in Florida (2019-2020) and a resident artist at Cobb Mountain Art & Ecology Project in California (2020-2022).

Currently, he is an adjunct professor of ceramics at the Yavapai College in Prescott, Arizona.
